Viewing Mount Fuji from Tokyo

Mount Fuji is 100 km from central Tokyo, so the view depends on air clarity more than altitude. Winter mornings deliver crisp sightings on roughly two days in three; summer afternoons rarely do. This guide ranks the best free and paid Tokyo viewpoints and tells you when to show up.

When Fuji is visible from Tokyo

Best months are November through February, when dry continental air keeps haze low.

Best hours are the first hour after sunrise and the last hour before sunset, when the sun lights the snow cap and the air has not warmed into haze.

After a cold front or heavy rain the air is washed clean for a day or two. Check our live forecast before committing to a viewpoint.

Free viewpoints

Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, Shinjuku: free observation deck on the 45th floor, open until 22:00. The south deck has the cleanest Fuji line. No reservation needed.

Bunkyo Civic Center, Korakuen: free 25th floor lounge with a wide western window. Quieter than Shinjuku, fewer crowds at sunset.

Carrot Tower, Sangenjaya: free 26th floor sky lounge. Closer to ground level so the view is hazier, but a fine sunset stop on the Den-en-toshi line.

Yoyogi Hachiman bridge and Hatonomori Hachiman shrine: street level sight lines on clear winter mornings.

What to bring

A 70 to 200 mm lens to fill the frame with the peak. Wider lenses make Fuji look like a bump on the horizon.

A polarising filter cuts glass reflections at indoor decks and deepens the sky.

Arrive 30 minutes before sunset for the golden cap, stay 20 minutes after for the blue hour silhouette.

FAQ

Can you see Mount Fuji from Tokyo every day?+

No. In winter Fuji is visible roughly two days in three from a tall building. In summer it is often invisible behind humid haze, even when the sky looks clear.

Is Shibuya Sky or the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building better for Fuji?+

Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building is free and very good. Shibuya Sky is paid, open air and unmatched on a clear sunset, but only if you book ahead.

Do I need a tripod?+

Tripods are not allowed at most Tokyo observation decks. Push your camera against the glass with a rubber lens hood instead.
