Where to sit, by route and train.

All three Tokaido Shinkansen trains pass Fuji at the same physical spot near Shin-Fuji. What changes with the train type is the minute it happens, because Nozomi skips stops, Hikari skips fewer, and Kodama stops at every station.

Train types

Nozomi, Hikari and Kodama — same tracks, different timing.

They share the Tokaido line and pass the mountain at the same place, but they reach that place at different minutes. Pick the train that matches your pass and your patience.

Nozomi のぞみ

Fastest. Between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka it stops only at Shin-Yokohama, Nagoya, Kyoto and Shin-Osaka.

Passes Fuji at full speed about 40–44 minutes after leaving Tokyo. The peak window lasts roughly 25 seconds. Not covered by the standard Japan Rail Pass.

Hikari ひかり

Medium. Adds stops such as Odawara, Shizuoka or Hamamatsu depending on the service.

Also passes Fuji at full speed, but reaches the viewing stretch a few minutes later than Nozomi because of the extra Odawara stop. Fully covered by the JR Pass.

Kodama こだま

Slowest. Stops at every Tokaido Shinkansen station, including Shin-Fuji.

The only train that actually stops at Shin-Fuji station, giving you a stationary platform view on a clear day. Ideal for photographers. Fully covered by the JR Pass.

Seat side never changes with train type. Going west from Tokyo, Fuji is always on the right (D and E window seats). Going east toward Tokyo, Fuji is on the left (A window seat). Car numbering can flip, so confirm direction on the platform display before boarding.

Photo tips

Shooting from a moving train.

Shutter speed

Lock at 1/1000 or faster. The reflection in the window is the enemy of slower shutters.

Lens choice

A 24 to 70 mm zoom is enough. Don't bother with long lenses, you can't track fast enough.

Window prep

Press the lens hood gently against the glass to kill cabin reflections.

Phone mode

Use 1x lens, burst mode, and tap to lock focus on the peak as soon as it appears.

Side check

Confirm direction on the platform display. Trains do not reverse, but car numbering can flip.

Backup plan

If clouds win, head straight to a Fuji viewpoint on arrival. The mountain often clears by afternoon.
