World Heritage

Mt Fuji as UNESCO heritage.

In June 2013 UNESCO inscribed Mt Fuji as a cultural site under the title Fujisan, sacred place and source of artistic inspiration. The listing has 25 components scattered across two prefectures.

Why cultural, not natural

Mt Fuji was nominated as a natural site in the early 1990s but withdrawn over rubbish and over development. It was successfully relisted as a cultural site in 2013, recognising it as a sacred mountain and the subject of centuries of Japanese art, including the Hokusai woodblocks.

Outstanding universal value

UNESCO recognised Fuji as a religious mountain that inspired Shinto and Buddhist pilgrimage, and as a subject that shaped how the world pictures Japan through ukiyo-e and modern landscape art.
