Lake Kawaguchi

Best for
First visit, easy access, ryokan

Biggest tourism base. Direct bus from Tokyo, ropeway, Oishi Park flower beds.

Lake Yamanaka

山中湖
Best for
Sunsets, swans, big sky

Largest lake by area and highest in elevation. Wide open eastern shore for sunset Fuji and Diamond Fuji in October and February.

Lake Sai

西湖
Best for
Quiet hiking and forest

Surrounded by Aokigahara forest. Iyashi no Sato thatched village and bat caves on the south shore.

Lake Shoji

精進湖
Best for
Photographers and campers

Smallest of the five. Child Fuji composition through the saddle of Mt Omuro is iconic.

Lake Motosu

本栖湖
Best for
1000 yen note view, clear water

Deepest and most transparent. The Fuji view from the northwest shore is printed on the back of the 1000 yen note.
