How we handle your data on mtfujitoday.com and in the Mt Fuji Today app. Short version: we collect very little, we never sell it, and optional tracking stays off until you say yes. In force since 11 August 2026.

Who we are

Mt Fuji Today is an independent travel information service that publishes live Mt Fuji visibility scores, weather and volcanic data, webcams, viewpoint guides and trip planning content. We operate the website mtfujitoday.com and the Mt Fuji Today mobile app for iOS and Android.

We are the controller of the personal data described here. For any privacy request, contact privacy@mtfujitoday.com.

What we collect

We keep collection to the minimum needed to run the service.

  • Newsletter data. Your email address, the page you signed up from, the chosen sending frequency and the timestamp, when you subscribe.
  • Messages you send us. Your email address and message content when you contact us or submit a viewpoint correction.
  • Local preferences. Units, chosen region, saved viewpoints and your consent choice, stored on your own device and not sent to us.
  • Technical request data. IP address, user agent, requested URL and timestamp, processed by our hosting provider in short lived server logs for security and abuse prevention.
  • Optional analytics. Aggregated, anonymous page and feature usage, only if you consent.

We do not collect precise location, we do not ask for a date of birth, and we do not run advertising profiles or sell personal data. The mobile app does not use the Advertising Identifier (IDFA) and does not track you across other companies' apps or websites.

Children

The service is intended for a general travel audience and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe a child has sent us personal data, email us and we will delete it.

Why we use it, and our legal basis

  • To deliver the service you asked for such as showing live conditions and sending the newsletter you subscribed to. Legal basis: performance of a contract, or consent for the newsletter.
  • To keep the service secure and reliable including rate limiting, abuse prevention and debugging. Legal basis: legitimate interests.
  • To understand what to improve using aggregated analytics. Legal basis: consent.
  • To personalise recommendations and partner offers based on the content you viewed on this site. Legal basis: consent.

Data sources and third parties

Live conditions come from public data feeds. Reading these feeds involves your browser or our servers contacting the provider, and that provider will see the request.

  • Open-Meteo for weather, cloud cover, humidity and visibility.
  • Japan Meteorological Agency for seismic and volcanic activity data.
  • YouTube (Google) for embedded live webcam streams.
  • Supabase for our database, authentication and server functions.
  • Resend for sending newsletter and transactional email.
  • Klook and other travel partners for tour and activity listings.

Some of these providers are outside the EEA and the UK. Where that is the case, transfers rely on the European Commission's standard contractual clauses or an adequacy decision.

Affiliate links

Some outbound links to rail passes, tours, stays and travel gear are affiliate links. If you buy through one, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Following such a link sends you to the partner's own site, where the partner's privacy policy and cookies apply. Affiliate revenue never changes our visibility data or the ranking rules we publish.

How long we keep data

  • Newsletter subscriptions: until you unsubscribe, then deleted within 30 days.
  • Messages you send us: up to 24 months, so we can follow up on corrections.
  • Server logs: typically 30 days.
  • Device preferences and consent: on your device until you clear them or reset consent.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you can request access to your data, correction, deletion, restriction, portability, or object to processing based on legitimate interests. You can withdraw consent at any time, including analytics and personalisation, without affecting the rest of the service.

California residents may request disclosure or deletion of personal information and may opt out of sharing for cross context behavioural advertising. We do not sell personal information.

Email privacy@mtfujitoday.com and we will reply within 30 days. Every newsletter also includes a one click unsubscribe link. If you are in the EEA or the UK, you may also complain to your local data protection authority.

Security

Traffic is served over HTTPS. Database access is protected by row level security policies, admin access requires multi factor authentication, and secrets are stored server side and never shipped to the browser. No service can promise perfect security, so we also keep the amount of personal data we hold deliberately small.

Changes to this policy

We update this policy when the service changes. The date at the top always reflects the current version, and material changes are announced in the newsletter and, where consent is affected, by asking you again.
