Renting at Kawaguchiko

When to rent

One time climbers fly with a small bag and pick up boots, jacket, headlamp and poles in Kawaguchiko. Reserve ahead in July-August.

When to buy

If you hike at home anyway, buy in your country. Fitted gear at home beats borrowed gear in Japan.

FAQ

Common questions

Can I climb Fuji in sneakers?

Strongly discouraged. The descent is loose volcanic gravel and ankles roll easily. Ankle-support boots are the single most important item.

Do I need a tent?

No, camping is not allowed on Fuji. You sleep in a mountain hut or do a bullet climb without sleep.

Is a sleeping bag needed in the hut?

No, huts provide a futon. Bring a silk liner if you want extra hygiene.

How heavy should my pack be?

Aim for under 6 kg. Anything heavier slows you down on the descent.
