Chureito Pagoda
About this viewpoint
Chureito Pagoda sits on a hillside above Arakurayama Sengen Park and offers the most photographed framing of Mount Fuji in Japan. The classic composition combines vermillion pagoda, cherry blossoms and a snow capped peak in the same frame. Arrive before sunrise to secure a tripod spot on the upper viewing deck.
Why it is famous
Built in 1963 as a peace memorial, Chureito was an unremarkable suburban pagoda until photographers discovered the alignment with Fuji and the cherry trees of Arakurayama Sengen Park. Today it is the cover of nearly every Japan travel guide.
When to go
Cherry blossom week (typically April 8 to 15) is peak, with autumn momiji from mid to late November a close second. Snow capped Fuji shows from late November through early May. Summer is hazy with no snow.
How to shoot it
The upper viewing deck handles about 20 tripods. Sunrise gives the pink alpenglow on Fuji and back lit cherry blossoms. Blue hour after sunset is quieter and the pagoda lights come on. Use a graduated ND if you shoot directly into the morning sun.
What to do nearby
Walk down to Arakurayama Sengen Shrine for a 15 minute purification ritual, then take the 10 minute walk to Shimo-Yoshida for Showa era backstreet photography. Fuji-Q Highland is a 10 minute drive for families.
Photographer tips
- Climb the 398 steps from the shrine. There is no road to the top.
- Cherry blossom week is shoulder to shoulder. Weekdays before 06:00 are calmer.
- Bring a 24 to 70 mm zoom. The pagoda fills the frame at around 50 mm.

Small park lot near the shrine, fills before 05:00 in cherry season. Overflow lot 600 m downhill.
398 stone steps, no lift. A switchback path on the east side is gentler but still steep.
24 to 70 mm full frame for the classic frame, 70 to 200 mm to isolate the pagoda and peak.
