Picks with the mountain in view

Fujiyama Onsen, Fujiyoshida

Large traditional bath house next to Fuji Q Highland. Day use, no overnight needed. Direct Fuji view from the outdoor pools.

Kaiun no Yu, Lake Kawaguchiko

Day spa above the lake with a rotenburo facing Fuji across the water.

Beniya, Lake Yamanakako

Quiet ryokan with private open air baths overlooking the lake and Fuji on clear mornings.

Tenzan Tohji-kyo, Hakone

Rustic day onsen complex with several pools. Hakone's classic, no Fuji from the bath but a great pairing with a Fuji day trip.

Etiquette

Quick onsen rules

  • · Wash and rinse fully at the seated showers before entering the bath.
  • · No swimwear. A small modesty towel is fine but does not go in the water.
  • · Many onsen still restrict guests with visible tattoos. Look for tattoo friendly baths or use a cover patch.
  • · Tie up long hair. Do not photograph in the bath area.
