Lake Motosuko (1000 yen note view)
About this viewpoint
Lake Motosuko sits at the western end of the Fuji Five Lakes and is the source of the iconic reverse Fuji on the back of the 1000 yen note. The viewpoint is a 30 minute hike up from the Nakanokura Pass, with a small wooden observation deck for tripods.
Why the 1000 yen note
The image was photographed in 1935 by Koyo Okada from this very ridge. The Bank of Japan adopted it on the 5000 yen series in 1984 and again on the 1000 yen note since 2004.
Three lake combo
Pair with Lake Saiko (Iyashi no Sato thatched village) and Lake Shojiko (smallest, quietest) for a three lake morning loop. Most photographers skip these and miss the calm.

- The path is steep and unpaved, allow 30 to 40 minutes uphill.
- Hold up a 1000 yen note for the matching photo, a tradition for visitors.
- Combine with Shojiko and Saiko for a quieter Five Lakes loop.
