Tsuyu
Mount Fuji in the rainy season.
Japan's rainy season (tsuyu) runs from early June to late July. Visibility drops to roughly 20-30% but the upside is fewer tourists, hydrangea-fringed temples and a moody Fuji that almost no one photographs.
Reality
Will I actually see Fuji?
Some days, yes. The trick is timing: morning visibility before 9 AM is materially better than afternoons. Stay at least two nights so a single rainy day does not write off the trip. Use our live forecast to plan your viewing window. After the front passes through, the air is the cleanest of the year and the summit pops.
The upside
What rainy season does well
- · Hydrangeas (ajisai) bloom across the region, especially near Lake Kawaguchi.
- · Lavender begins at Oishi Park in late June.
- · Hotels are 30-40% cheaper than peak season.
- · The Yoshida Trail opens July 1 - you can be among the first climbers of the year.
Plan B
Indoor alternatives
- · Itchiku Kubota Art Museum on the north shore
- · Fujiyama Museum next to Fuji-Q
- · Lake Kawaguchi Music Forest
- · Onsen day visits at Yamanashi Yurari or Fuji Chobo no Yu Yurari
