Why views are poor
Warm humid air from the Pacific holds moisture, and afternoon heating builds cloud on the slopes almost daily. The mountain is often invisible from mid morning onwards even on a blue sky day.

July and August are the busiest months on the mountain and the hardest months to see it. Plan around early mornings, and treat any clear afternoon as a bonus.

What to expect
The hours that work
First light to about 08:00 is the reliable window. Cloud usually caps the summit by late morning and clears again briefly around sunset.
Climbing season
Trails open roughly early July to early September, and this is the only period with staffed huts and open summit facilities. Reservations and trail fees apply on the Yoshida route.
Cooler places to wait out the heat
Lake Saiko and the lava caves stay cool, the fifth station is around 10 C below the base, and Asagiri Highlands catch a breeze most afternoons.
What is at its best
Green slopes, lavender at Oishi Park in early July, long daylight, evening festivals and lake activities like kayaking and SUP.
Practical notes
Book buses ahead in the Obon week, carry water, and expect thunderstorms in the late afternoon. Insects are active around forest trails.
