Mount Fuji covered in deep winter snow under a clear blue sky

Best time

Mount Fuji in winter.

Cold dry air and the long dormant season give December through February the highest Fuji visibility rate of any time of year. Plan around clear mornings and the deepest snow cover of the season.

Month by month

When the mountain shows itself

December

Snow cap fully formed by mid month. Clear cold mornings, high visibility around 60 percent.

January

Statistically the clearest month of the year. Diamond Fuji from Yamanakako early in the month.

February

Cold but still very clear. Last chance for deep snow cover before spring haze sets in.

What to know

Practical tips

  • · Trails to the summit are closed. Climbing is not permitted outside July to early September.
  • · Roads above the fifth station close. Plan around lake viewpoints, Chureito and Hakone.
  • · Mornings before 9 am are sharpest. Cloud often builds by early afternoon.
  • · Bring serious cold weather layers. Yamanakako can drop well below freezing.
