When to go
Cherry blossom peaks mid April, one week after Tokyo. Autumn maples mid to late November. Snow on Fuji from November through May. Sunrise is the quietest hour with the best light.
Iconic viewpoint
The Chureito Pagoda view of Mt Fuji.
A five storey pagoda above Fujiyoshida, reached after a 398 step climb through cherry trees. The platform looks straight across to Fuji and is the single most photographed Fuji angle in Japan.
How to get there
JR Chuo Line to Otsuki, then Fujikyuko Line to Shimo Yoshida Station. 10 minute walk plus 398 steps to the viewing terrace. Allow 2 hours from Shinjuku.
Photo tips
A 35 to 70 mm lens frames pagoda and Fuji well. The terrace platform is small, queues form for the front rail. Sunrise gives clean pink light on Fuji and no harsh shadows on the pagoda.
Practical
Park and pagoda grounds are free. The pagoda itself is closed to the public. Toilets at the lower park entrance. Bring water in summer, the climb is steep.
