What to wear

By season at the base

Winter

Down jacket, warm hat, gloves. Lake Kawaguchiko regularly drops below freezing overnight.

Spring

Layers. Mornings near zero, afternoons warm. A windproof shell is enough on most days.

Summer

T-shirt and shorts by the lakes, sweater for evenings. Sun protection matters more than warmth.

Autumn

Jacket and light layers. Early November can hit single digits before sunrise.

Common questions

How cold is Mount Fuji summit in summer?

Around 5-10 °C at dawn in July and August. Wind chill drops it lower. Even summer climbers need a warm layer at the top.

When does it snow on Mount Fuji?

First dusting usually in October, full cap by mid-November. Snow stays into June at the summit in most years.

Is it warm enough to swim at Lake Kawaguchiko?

Yes in July and August water temperature hits about 22 °C, though most visitors just paddle.
